Running Day 10 June 15, 2012
Man it was a hot night. I was pooped out. We had a belly bug in the house this week so I had anight where I got maybe 3 broken hours of sleep, I’ve put in 2 extra hours at the office and I am zonked. But I am working toward an excuse free life as it relatesto running. Can’t let heat or cold (unless major extreme) or fatigue or tight pants or a good tv show stop me from running as I should.
Well it worked. Here was my night:
Make, eat and clean up from dinner
Make coffee for the AM
Pack Lunch for work
RUN RUN RUN!!!!!!!!!!
Shower (because I was a greased pig)
Prepare a nice snack for the baseball boy when he returns home
Attend baseball game from 8-1030pm
I don’t’ mean to be a baby but MAN THAT’S A LOT!!!! My family is important, their nutrition is importation, their activities are important as is my running as regularly as I can. So somehow I juggled all of that and the kids were happy and smiling when itwas all said an done even though it was a rushed, hurried evening. Not sure how long I’d be able to swing that schedule but I did it once!!! Yeah!
Also I beefed up the running routing. Rather than run for 60 seconds walk for 90. I ran for 90 seconds, walked for 2 minutes. Given the schedule and the 85 degree day with a nice breeze, sleep deprivation and a busy night I increased my running andfelt wonderful. My legs feel strong and I feel more resilient than I did; less clumsy on my feet. I have to say I am proud. A wonderful evening.

Running Day 9 June 9, 2012
I ran my tushy off in the heat today and guess what I came home to. My loving sweet daughter WASHED MY FEET!!! Best day ever! I ran and am sore and tired but this made up for all of that.
Running Day 8 June 7, 2012
Okay so I haven’t run in a while. A long while. I have 2 really good
excuses only you will get bored and irritated with me. Here’s the good
news:
My heel and hamstring on the left leg hurt but I ran anyway.
I was hot and tired and it’s been busy and I’m not sleeping the best, but I
got out there and hustled tail anyway. Still strongly recommend chapstick,
sports bra (a new find out of obvious necessity), gum and a good watch. I feel
good today and the heel hurts
less. I ran into a friend today
that I used to work with. He was telling me about his wife’s success story. I
like the couple so I celebrate their successes. He said they’re doing a family
overhaul in the food/exercise department and trying to move away from processed
foods to a more sugar-free/whole foods diet with exercise. Sounds good to me and
similar; I am doing that in my home too but not making it obvious to anyone that
THIS is my intent. They just see changes because the freezer showed up.
I digress.
So he tells me she works out like 7 days a week and does zumba and weights
and stuff. She was just over 200 lbs when she started and a size 14/16. She is
not 127 with a goal of 115 and a size 2. HOW INSPIRING!! Then he says to
me:
‘Don’t run……...lift weights.
Running is bad for you and the cardio is not needed’. I use my angry font because it bothered me. I may not
be doing things the way your wife is, but I think I am on the journey I am
supposed to take. Don’t thwart someone’s success because it does not mirror
another person’s success. Then he follows up with ‘but hey, keep running if that works for you.’ Uh
okay. Sure. I’ll go do that..and hopefully with a smidge more enthusiasm as you just used to say
the words!! Grrrr…
But off I run. Not sure when my next available run is as a SUPER BUSY
weekend is in store for the Brunner Bunch!
Running Day 8 May 28, 2012
(Memorial Day)
BOY A I TIRED!!! It’s been a long weekend but a wonderful, tiring weekend.
I spent it in the kitchen, out digging in the yard and playing lots and lots of
fun things with the kids. But I endured! I put on my big girl pants and hauled
buns though the wonderful, peaceful cemetery. It was so hot but the breeze was
wonderful. Dried most of the sweat until I stopped running and then I swear my
sweat gland went into overdrive and caused some funny wet spots on my shirt. I
won’t even go there but let’s say the upper-female portion of my shirt was
highlighted. I felt good but tired. I was energized but sore. Hoping the
sluggish feeling starts to leave before long. I fear I will lose my UMPH!

Running Day 7, May 24, 2012
I was a slug today. Struggling a little with PMS but I am determined to fight though it. Dinner consisted of an ice cream bar and a piece of cheese. About 11 that night I couldn't sleep because I was hungry. So I ate 2 hotdogs and some peanuts. HOLY MESS no wonder I have to run in this heat! ha! I am scheduled to run Saturday when it is about 150 degrees out so this will prove very interesting. A test of my determination. More to come.......
Running Day 6, May 21, 2012
Getting easier but with the increase in the extracurricular schedule and mother nature turning up the furnace, IT'S HARD TO KEEP THIS UP, but I am on a mission. I won't give up yet because I've barely gotten started. Calves are a little sore and I see no noticable difference except maybe in terms of posture. Call me crazy but I feel a little taller, lighter. I have not weighed myself and I'm not suggesting I've lost weight but I FEEL taller and lighter.
Running Day 5, May 20 2012
Something wonderful happened, Jackson wanted to run with me and he pulled it off!! He was winded and wouldn't stop talking so he suffered a running cramp. He decided about 1/2 way though to walk and I'd job again and then on the 90 second walk, I'd circle back and meet him. He did awesome and now I think I've got him encouraged enough to be my partner. I have extended the week one training through a second week. I illuded to doing this but I've decided and it's working well. I'd rather do this well and master it and feel so much confidence as a result than blast thorugh the program, say I did it and never return to it because it about killed me to complete. So it's all good. I couldn't run last night because we had a crazy weird thunderstorm and there was NO WAY I was going out there. More to come. :-)
Running Day 4, May 18, 2012
Well I got out there adn did it again and forgot to post about it. Okay will I didn't necessarily forget but it's been so busy I am lucky to get the run in. I am feeling better, stronger and more confident that I can leave the cell phone at home and that I won't need to call 911 to come and give me oxygen or provide some sort of noodly - leg support.
Running Day 3, May 15, 2012
I am scheduled to run to night; I have not yet ran!!! It’s 11:30 in the AM
and I am having scheduling issues. Tonight from 5:30 – 7 there is a band concert at school and
my dear Jackie-boy plays the flute. Well, not for much longer as he has recently
decided he hates it. He’s DREADING tonight and I’d love nothing more than to get him out of it,
but alas, what sort of helicopter mom would I be if I did that. So, I do not
have the freedom to run tonight
when I want, I have to work it in. New for me. Everything’s still new but this
will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I may be running in the dark, or dusk which might be cool but
I job through and around a cemetery so it may be a little creepy too. Time will tell. I will keep
this post intact and let you know the outcome. I am praying right now for calm
and collected and the sense of ‘care for yourself Karen, do this without arguing
or complaining’. The good news is there was no homework last night and there
most likely (because of the concert) be no homework tonight so there is an obstacle removed. More to come.

Running Day 2,
May 13, 2012
I was tired today and my mother was in town. Those
added stressors REALLY made me want to make an excuse to not run. So I ran. It
felt good but felt like I struggled a little more than I did on night #1. When
the hubby and I ran last year I remember wishing I could have time to practice
the run and my increase my endurance for 2 weeks rather than run, so that is
what I‘m going to do. If the goal is to get up and running then it should
matter how much time I take to learn and master runs. I do recall getting to
week 3 …or whatever week it was when you jump up to running for 90 seconds and
walking for 5 minutes or something but lemme tell ya when you have only ran a
grand total of 6 times and are still sweating profusely and winded at the end
AND THEN you toss 90 seconds on there you are tired and feel every inch of your
body the next day.
So we’ll see if
this works. As far as my body goes, my legs and butt and hips are a little sore
but I am not struggling to get in and out of a chair. I feel it and it’s nice.
It’s a reminder that I conquered another day of this running business and have
lived to tell about it.
To celebrate, I’m
having a burger, fries and monster sauce. I’m so ashamed.

Running Day 1 (May 11, 2012)
I did it and I survived. I felt pretty good. I felt like I accomplished something. The days of monster sauce and greasy fries has not fallen off of me but that's a lot to ask I think. :-) I discovered in my brief encounter with the program last year that I require 2 things when I run..well 3 actually. A good watch to keep the time because YOU WILL study the watch as you run. This is where the buddy system would be another good approach to the program. One of you keep the time for your friend and provide the encouragement (10 more seconds.....5 more seconds...okay WALK!!). The hubby and I did this last year and it was very effective. The other 2 items are chap stick and gum. My lips and mouth get SO DRY when I run it's almost hard to find the saliva to swallow just to make sure I don't start coughing like a seasoned smoker. I don't take the chapstick with me of course, but I load it on before I leave the house.
So what happened last year that I was unsuccessful. In a nutshell: Laziness and Vacation.
Hubby and I were entering our 3rd week of the program when we went to the Dells for vacation. Determined to not let vacation get in our way we were prepared to spend week 3 jogging in the beautiful, scenic, VERY WARM Wisconsin Dells. Spending the day, however climbing ladders, steps, dodging waves in their wonder wave pool left our legs like noodles. We both felt there was no feasible way to push forward and potentially do ourselves in the next day and damper the fun of the entire family because we are to sore or noodley to walk. In hindsight, we sould have repeated week 2 but that is neither here nor there. So there you have it. The story of the failure. Oh and the laziness kicked in when we returned home because we couldn't decide if we should start over, start with week 3 and what if we fail? What if it's hot? Yeah..such failure!
I am running alone this time. I'd like for the hubby to run with me but with timing, the house demands and the demands of the kids and work our schedules are just not synching up at all. Perhaps this will change and I can run week 1 for like 4 weeks or somethign and get really good and strong and confident and encourage him. Ah.. a woman can dream.
Next run is tonight so wish me luck! Spaghetti Night in the Brunner house so I can load up on carbs, rest my gut and then haul buns. The next post should not be so large; thanks for tuning in. :-)
